History of Manipal
Updated: Mar 5, 2021
The name Manipal is made up of two Tulu words - 'mann' and 'palla'. It means 'mud' and 'lake'. The university town that we all love was transformed in 1953 by Dr. TMA Pai. He built Kasturba Medical College, popularly called KMC, which was the country's first private medical college.

“The place now has 22 colleges (across streams like engineering, communication and commerce) spread across a 600 acre campus. .”
Over the years, Manipal University has been a breeding ground for several luminaries like Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft), Rajeev Suri (ex-CEO of Nokia) and Vikas Khanna (Michelin starred chef).
